A Farewell Tribute to William Holub
                                                         (1919-2009)

William Holub, a giant in Catholic publishing, died peacefully on January 4th in Groton, Connecticut. Mary O’Connor Holub, his wife for sixty-seven years, and his son William were with him. He was ninety years old. Longfellow describes his legacy perfectly:

Lives of great men all remind us
We can make our lives sublime,
     And, departing, leave behind us
Footprints on the sand of time.

Bill’s publishing career started at Bruce Publishing Company in Milwaukee after he graduated from Marquette University with a degree in Journalism. He enlisted in the Air Force at the start of the Second World War and served as a bomber Navigator, flying missions from bases in England. Upon his discharge, he returned to Bruce Publishing, one of America's largest Catholic book publishers at that time.

Bill then accepted a position as Business Manager at Pflaum Publishing Company in Dayton, Ohio. Pflaum was the major Catholic publisher serving the Catholic School market.

In the early 1960s he accepted the position of General Manager of America Press, a Jesuit magazine and book publishing company in New York City. At that point, Bill, Mary, and their five children moved to Summit, New Jersey. In the 1970s Bill launched, Holub and Associates, providing publishers with promotion, publicity, and business consulting services and acting as publishing agent for many well-known Catholic authors.

The Paulist Press hired Bill Holub full-time as Sales Promotion Director, after Bill had worked for them on a freelance basis for his own company. His next, and final, career move was to Twenty-Third Publications in Mystic, Connecticut. Bill served as corporate publicist and author liaison from 1980 until his retirement in 1999 at the age of 81.

During his 55-year career in Catholic book and magazine publishing, Bill served on the Board of Directors for the Catholic Press Association, and served as its President in the 1960s. Bill Holub’s service to Catholic publishing was recognized and lauded when he was awarded the prestigious Papal Knight of St. Gregory Award while at America Press.

According to Neil Kluepfel, founder and former publisher of Twenty-Third Publications, "Catholic publishing has lost one of its most respected members, someone whose career spanned most of the twentieth century. He was dedicated to Catholic publishing, a real businessman at heart, but he was also warm and approachable, genuinely loved by all his coworkers. I feel privileged to have shared a major part of Bill’s journey, and I will miss him."

Bret Thomas, CEO and present publisher at Twenty-Third Publications, expressed his condolences to Bill’s family. "There are so many wonderful stories about Bill here in the company. He was that rare human being who had everyone’s respect. He could find the smallest slip of paper under piles of newspapers on his desk, and he knew the latest news in the Catholic publishing world the minute it was announced. I know I would have loved him and learned from him. You can be proud of his great accomplishments. He was a giant on whose shoulders I stand."

A memorial service is planned for January 17 at St. Thomas More Parish in North Stonington, Connecticut, where Bill had been a parishioner for almost twenty years.

Catholic Book Publishers Association Introduces New Executive Director Cliff Knighten

Mr. Cliff Knighten of San Antonio, Texas, has been hired as the new full-time executive director of the Catholic Book Publishers Association (CBPA).

In 2006, the Board of Directors of the CBPA, along with a subcommittee of publishers, went through a long-range strategic planning process for the future of the organization. Early on, it became evident that a full-time executive director was needed to successfully implement future plans.

“The CBPA is blessed to have found such a qualified person to lead us into the future. This is an exciting time for the organization, and we have confidence that Cliff will take the CBPA to new levels, while continuing the tradition and leadership the publishing community expects,” says Jill Kurtz, President of the CBPA Board of Directors.

CBPA exists to support the sustainability of viable and vibrant Catholic publishing, particularly in North America. The association is comprised of more than seventy publishing organizations, as well as numerous service and individual members.

Cliff has a vast range of experience in religious book publishing, marketing, and distribution. Previously he has held positions as marketing director for NavPress and Pinon Press, general market division director for David C. Cook Publishing Company, and manager of Viva Bookstore, a large independent Catholic bookstore in San Antonio.

“I am honored that the CBPA Board has chosen me to implement the goals and objectives of the Association and I look forward to strengthening the partnership between the CBPA and its members,” says Cliff.

Terry Wessels, former part-time executive director of the CBPA, will continue to serve the organization on a project-by-project basis. “I am grateful to the CBPA board of directors and our members for all the hours of work it has taken to bring our dream of hiring a full-time executive director to a reality,” says Terry.

“This new position will certainly increase our value as an association to the membership, as well as to Catholic/Christian bookstores, dioceses, parishes, colleges and universities, and the Catholic community at large. It is a great honor for me to now work with Cliff in serving our members via special projects.”

Jill Kurtz, President of the CBPA Board of Directors, expresses her gratitude to Terry for her service thus far, “As Terry’s tenure as executive director comes to an end, we cannot fail to mention that she has given the CBPA an incredible amount of her time and the board will be forever grateful for her dedication and service over the years.”

The CBPA Board will host a reception on Wednesday, February 25, 2009 at the Anaheim Marriott to introduce Cliff and honor Terry’s contributions to the organization. This event will be held in conjunction with the annual Los Angeles Religious Education Congress in Anaheim, California.

Destination: Washington, D.C.   (from the SAMP employee newsletter)

Father Jeremy Harrington
has been named commissary and guardian of the Franciscan Holy Land Monastery in Washington, D.C., for a three-year term. His appointment was officially announced July 28 by Father Pierbattista Pizzaballa, OFM, the Custos of the Holy Land, who is based in Jerusalem. Jeremy leaves for Washington later this week for meetings with Father Pierbattista and others; he will return to Cincinnati in late August or early September to complete his move to Washington. He shared some of the background with InsideSAMP.

Q: This seems so sudden. Is it?
A: The move has been in process for some weeks but could not be announced until now. One reason for the quick transfer is that the present commissary’s term is up, and he is ill. I’m sorry that I don’t have more time to say good-bye to coworkers and friends. I’ve always said that I wanted to retire from SAMP because I thought it was good for SAMP to have a smooth transition, which has been accomplished.  Father Dan Kroger and Tom Shumate and others are giving great leadership. I never intended to retire completely from ministry. The position in Washington was not even on my radar screen. The call from Father Pierbattista came as a complete surprise, but if I can serve there I am willing to try.

Q: Can you give some details about your new ministry?
A: The Franciscans serve as custodians of the Holy Places in the Holy Land at the request of Rome (www.custodia.org). The 300 friars from various countries who serve there are called a Custody, similar to a province. The head of the custody, known as the Custos, is Father Pierbattista. The Custody has a friary in Washington called the Franciscan Holy Land Monastery (www.myfranciscan.org). It is also called the Commissariat of the Holy Land. It recruits friars to serve in the Custody and collects money to finance the care of shrines, welcoming of pilgrims and pastoral and educational ministries. The friar in charge of the Commissariat is called the Commissary.

Q: How do you feel about the appointment?
A: I’m a little scared and apprehensive, but also willing and excited. It is an honor to be asked to serve in such an important ministry. The friars who work in the Holy Land need support; the Christians who live there need even more. This position will be challenging for me. Maybe it will keep my brain working! I am happy to serve the approximately 20 friars who live at the Monastery in Washington and to welcome many guests from various parts of the world. A number of diocesan priests and others who study at nearby Catholic University of America also live at the Monastery. The Monastery has beautiful replicas of the shrines of the Holy Land and gives many tours to school groups and others. Masses are celebrated for the public and the Sacrament of Reconciliation is offered throughout the day.

Q: Does this mean your brief sabbatical has already come to an end?
A: I have already completed the St. Bonaventure/Blessed John Duns Scotus study tour in Europe. It was wonderful! I still intend to take the Pilgrimage in the Steps of St. Paul that SAMP has generously provided me, but I don’t have it scheduled yet. I’ll also be going to the Holy Land. And at some point in the coming months I will get away for a period of prayer. I do miss my relationships with everyone at SAMP! I am very grateful for my years with you and the spectacular sendoff you gave me!

MARY CAROL KENDZIA RESIGNS FROM CBPA BOARD OF DIRECTORS AFTER LEAVING TWENTY-THIRD PUBLICATIONS/BAYARD Dear Colleagues,

I have resigned from the board of directors of the CBPA because I am no longer working for Twenty-Third Publications/Bayard. This move came about because of organizational changes taking place within the company, and was made by mutual agreement.

Thank you for your support during the recent election. I had been eagerly anticipating a second term on the board. We have so much positive work ahead, especially with incorporating the interests of all members of CBPA in a more prominent and active way, and meeting the challenges of the publishing industry today as a united membership organization, strengthened by shared resolve and
varied talents.

I have enjoyed working with each of you, and it has been an honor to be counted among such exceptional religious publishing professionals. Please know that my thoughts and prayers will be with the CBPA in the months and years to come.
