For Immediate Release
Catholic Book Publishers Association Honors Sr. Edith Prendergast, RSC, with 2008 Lifetime Achievement Award
The Catholic Book Publishers Association is pleased to announce that the winner of its 2008 Lifetime Achievement Award is Sister Edith Prendergast, RSC, Director of the Office of Religious Education for the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. Sister Edith truly personifies the criteria for this award as set forth by the Board of Directors of the Association: “This award is bestowed upon a person, group, or association whose influence on the Catholic media has been marked by significant accomplishments that have advanced the work of the Church in a notable manner.”
Sister Edith directs the annual Religious Education Congress in Anaheim, an international event that attracts over 41,000 participants and speakers. This gathering affords a broad range of Catholic publishers the opportunity to exhibit their print and multimedia resources as well as to feature their most sought-after authors and presenters in a wide variety of workshops.
Not only has Sister Edith been steadfast in her commitment and dedication to Catholic education on every level, but she also has been actively involved in many other facets of our faith-life, including social justice, multiculturalism, evangelization, spirituality, family ministry, parish life, and youth ministry. As mentor, facilitator, and committee member, she has shared from her wealth of experience and insight to exchange ideas as well as to inform discussions and action plans in these significant yet diverse areas.
In her capacity as author, educator, editor, and speaker, Sister Edith, with her profound wisdom, has influenced and encouraged countless people in their thirst for knowledge of the Church and its meaning in their lives. She continues to be an inspiration to the faithful in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, the Diocese of Orange, the state of California, and throughout the world.
Sister Edith has certainly lifted her gaze and seen anew throughout her years of service to the Church. Thus, it is fitting that the Catholic Book Publishers Association will present her with its 2008 Lifetime Achievement Award at a reception at the Anaheim Marriott Hotel on Wednesday, February 27, the evening prior to the opening of the 2008 Los Angeles Religious Education Congress.

The Benefits and Challenges of Print on Demand
David Prentice, Account Executive with Lightening Source, will address the various ways that Print on Demand can be incorporated into a typical publishing model, including the different ways to use digital printing to complement your title base, both front and back list. He will also discuss the way the Ingram Print to Order program works and how it has helped Publishers increase sales of titles loaded into the system.
Three responses will follow the presentation, each speaking to their experience with print on demand in their respective areas of responsibility:
Joe Riley, Director of Marketing, Liturgical Press Paul McMahon, Managing Editor, Paulist Press Mark Witbeck, Treasurer, Ave Maria Press
Sufficent time will be allowed for participants' questions and sharing of their own experience. Bob Hamma, Editorial Director, Ave Maria Press, Moderator
David Prentice joined Lightening Source in December of 2002 as an Account Executive. He primarily works with Large Publishing Houses helping them to incorporate the Lightning Source model into their current business plan.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Editorial Managers Peer Breakfast and Brainstorming for: Editorial Manager/Managing Editor/Senior Editor Session
Greetings,
Even though this message is last minute I thought it might be helpful to you. This e-mail is being sent to editorial managers and other management staff who might know Editorial Managers or “Senior Editorial” people that are attending RBTE this year. If you are not in editorial I encourage you to forward this to your Editorial Management colleagues who are attending RBTE.
The CBPA has organized a “Peer Breakfast” for editorial mangers to get together and discuss common areas of concern and opportunities for the CBPA to develop programming to reflect editorial needs. This will be a rather casual meeting where a light breakfast will be available. It’s an opportunity for you to get together with your peers. One key hope for the meeting is to develop a few organizing principles around which a “CBPA editorial seminar” might be designed for junior or entry level editors. Over the last several years managers (particularly heads of houses) have expressed a desire to have a two or three day program developed to introduce editors to concepts and ideas around their work (as Religious/Catholic publishing editors). The program would be more specifically related to religious publishing than any of the commercially available publishing seminars.
